Questionaiires

From my questionaiires which i have not been able to upload for technology reasons have shown me that poeple prefer a fast action paced opening sequence, relating to this point is the second question becuase most poeples favourite war genre film is saving private ryan(has a fast action packed opening)
I also discoverd that peoples favourite war sub genre was relating to true storys and finally the publics favourite destination for a war film to be set was in a rural location such as forests.

Textual Anaylisis 3 = Windtalkers

The opening scene consists of a close up of a flowing river surface which is then turned red by blood and finally a body floats past the camera this tells the audience straight away the type of film this is going to be which is a war film this can also be supported by the uniform and props the dead man is wearing and furthermore you can here the ambient sound of guns and explosions typically found in the war genre. Almost immediatly after the body there is a medium shot of the main character (Nicolas cage) shooting into the bushes across the river. The body was wearing the same uniform as cage's character which could mean that they are having trouble and are starting to lose the fight. the camera then pans across to the rest of the squad so we are introduced to more caracters whilst establishing more of the jungle setting also at this point there is another explosion in the background. There is a tense atmosphere because there is lots of smoke around so you cant see very far but there is also no music playing just the war ambience and the occasianl explosion to maybe make the audince jump which in turn then puts the audince into the characters shoes. Then the enemy soldiers start to attack at this point there is still no music put the pace of the editing does pick up to make it seem more chaotic and fast paced which is very common in the war genre. there are also some close ups of the charcters looking around this makes them come across as dazed or confused or in a war genre case it would make them come across as shell shocked or something similar.

Textual Analysis 2 = Rambo , First Blood

The opening scene of rambo fist blood consists of rambo walking(from a longshot ) on his own in the cold towards the camera (which is very similar to what i want in my film) with cars going past him this makes the audience feel that everybody has rejected him even though he has fought for there country. The sound in the scene has been kept diegetic as there are only noises are the assing cars . The editing is also very slow as there isnt much action to keep up with. The characters performance is kept very low key and emotionless as that is what he is trying to portray throught the film. the scene shows how his country have cast him aside after he quits the army which is similar to the idea of my film.
The mise-en-scen is kept very simple and is just a road with a car going past every now and then there is also a man walking ,Rambo, wearing what looks to be military clothes which tells the audience that he is or was once part of the army, the emptyness of the mise-en-scen could support the fact that he has now been rejected by the army and now lives alone which is why there is no life in the sequence.
The editing mainly consists of long takes which sets the slow pace for the rest of the sequence the slow pace because he's lived a life full of action and now all he wants to do is live peacefully, represented by slow editing using long takes.

Textual Anaylisis 1 = Saving Private Ryan

Saving private ryan begins with the action sequence of storming the beach on D-day. straight away this shows the audience thaty the film is going to be violent and establishes the scene and atmosphere of the scene.this opening sequence follows the generic conventions for both the action genre and war sub genre of fast paced editing and lots of camera wobble (signifying explosions and panic)with lots of bullet noise and generel war ambience, there are also guns and explosions which are expected of the war genre and are typicall for the action genre. This sequence also establishes the main character it does this by focusing on him and showing the scene from his perpective. The end of the sequence shows the camera pan down to a soldiers back labeled pvt ryan which then opens the plot of thew film.
The mise-en-scene in the opening scne is of a french beach with lots of metal obstacles littering the beach this is because it was trying to resemble the normandy invasion and its trying to be as true to its form as possible. There are also lots of boats floating in the backgorund.the costumes and props are those that would have been used in the actual invasaion so once again the film could show the real as it happend to a certain degree.
The sound used consists of both diegetic and non-diegetic with a strong abient sound. ther are plenty of explosions and gunshots with lots of shouting this builds up the chaos and panic that the soldiers are experiencing this again has been done to try and show the hard times that the soldeirs faced during the real thing. There has also been a lot of asynchronus sound added.
The sequnce has been heabily edited using lots of short takes and few transitions other than clear cuts they have also added in a lot post production sound.
Finally the camera work is following the generic conventions of both action films and war films by using lots of camera eyes( in the eyes of the soldier) and close ups to show the expression and emotion that is on the faces of the soldiers to make the audience feel for them.

Feedback from ideas presentation.

--I was told my film needs a clearer narrative.
-- I was also asked how i would show the flashbacks differing form the present times.

-- To start with i fixed the narrative by creating a deeper story and clear purpose.
--I have also found out how i will differ the past from the present, the past/ flashbacks will be shown with blacked out edges and in slow motion as opposed to the present being shown in normal modes.

Idea for my film/treatment

-Emotional war drama following a soldier who has left the war but still has memories of his unfortunate life-featuring emotional music, flashbacks into army life and how bad it was and how bad he is being treated now. There will also be a voice over commentating on the life of the former soldier mentioning what he has done and how he is treated. . There will be shots where he looks isolated and rejected and insignificant and there will also be flashbacks of him suffering in the army as he reloads his rifle and as he cowers behind cover to show how hard his life is. The flash backs would consist of shots shown through a scope and a pull focus of a gun barrel and reloading a magazine as well as running with the camera acting as his eyes and finally a shot of sneaking up on somebody and empty casings dropping on the floors steaming. Whereas the present day shots would be filmed as the character walks on his own carrying all his possesions to make the audince feeel sorry for him whilst looking at pictures of his fellow dead friends in utter solice

Genres to consider

Genres to consider =
Action: with examples such as saving private ryan/Rambo/ We were soldiers/involving such conventions as Guns,Vehicles fast paced, with generic actors like arnold schwarzzenegger, silvester stallone etc.

Drama:examples include saving private ryan again/Atonement/including conventions as Deep and Meaningfull, Emotion, love interest ,and disturbances in the equilibrium with generic actors such as will smith and colin firth.

Romance:films like bridget jones diary/titanic/notting hill /with conventions such as Emotion , Soft Paced editing ,Soft soppy music, romantic scenes and a love interest with generic actors such as hugh grant.

Horror: example films would be scream films/ saw films/halloween films with generic conventions Fast Paced editing , Bad guy, Knifes, Blood, sharp screaming sounds however there are not many generic actors for this genre

Comedy: with films like hot fuzz/ tropic thunder/ and has generic conventions such as funny lines, unserious acting, slapstick, with actors such as ben stiller, adam sandler, jack black

The genre i have decided to emulate is a war genre this is because i have enjoyed watching other war genre films i also like the content and action within the films. Furthermore i am able to recreate a war genre with the props and locations i have found and it will be different to everyone eles film. It would be original.

Russell and Harriets video

I think our film worked well and the plot was put across to the audince in a clear manor. However there may have been one too many transitions which may have overloaded the film. There was also a good dark atmosphere however the sound didnt come out very well so that ment that we had to record a voice over.the voiceover ruined the sinister atmosphere and instead replaced it with a comic effect. We did demonstrate the use of the 180 degree rule however there was still one or two shots which may have been on the wrong side and could have been filmed better. I think we aslo met the breif with good examples of dialogue, shot types and shot reverse shot. Funny stuff.

The frankfurt school

The hyperdermic syringe theory consists of people believing that the media have metaphorically injected ideas into peoples heads.i.e playing a voilent game would cause you to act voilently in reality.

hitlers ideology

Hitlers ideology

Hitler had a very different ideology. He believed that the world should only have the "perfect race" he also believed very strongly in exterminating the minor races this was named social darwinism. He also believed in the one perfect airyn race should be the only race on the earth. His ideology was very negative because he belied in the extermination of a whole type of people.

Male gaze

--Identification-----with the male lead:his actions become surrogate for our own part in the narrative.we phsycologically align ourselves with his point of view he is the ideal ego.

--Objectification----- of the males romantic interest the male lead desires the female form. as we are aligned with his point of view the audience desire the female lead also.

freud and lacan

-we construct our identities by looking at ourselves and at each other. As children we derive pleasure from looking at other poeples bodies(scopophilia)

-The first time we fully see ourselves in a mirror is the first time we understand ourselves as poeple.

-Cinema allows us to look at other poeple without being seen ourselves.we enjoy this sense of voyerism.

genre as a marketing tool

The Omen the first thing we notice is the generic colours of dull greys alos having the dead trees in the background with the light mist creates a generic atmosphere(a spooky mood) the dog in the foreground also gives the poster a sinister feel very much like theboy who is enshrouded with shadow which tells the audienvce that the film will be dark and shadowey(scary horror film)

Close up

Close up
useally a close up is on a face to show facial expression

Over shoulder

Over the shoulder shot
used in conversations to capture ones facial expressions from over the shoulder of thy other

Medium shot/high angle

Medium shot
Captures the people at waist-upwards also captures hand and face gestures (if they were facing the right way)
Its also a high angle shot because of the camera level however high angle shots are normally
to show status.

long shot

Long shot
used to introduce character(appearance)and background

very long/over the shoulder shot (two shot)

Very longshot
Used for establishing distance, setting, and it sets the scene
also over the shoulder to catch the (in this case)view from behind the character usually used in conversations.
This could also be a two shot as there are two people in the shot.
